GIBSONTON, FL — Hillsborough County Fire Rescue were called out early Saturday morning to battle a fire at a storage unit at 12704 U.S. 41 in Gibsonton.
Fire rescue received a 911 call at 12:09 a.m. reporting smoke coming from a building at the storage facility, according to a news release from Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.
Engine 29 was first on the scene, and used a fire rescue saw to cut through the roll-up door and then a handline, a small-diameter hose that can be fished inside a building to apply water directly to the fire.
The next engine on the scene connected to a nearby fire hydrant while crews cut adjacent storage units to prevent the fire from spreading.
Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to two storage units.
According to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, storage unit fires are particularly challenging because firefighters have no idea what's being stored in the unit. It could be anything from stacks of cardboard boxes to flammable liquids.
As a result, the crews also used firefighting foam and fire extinguishers to douse the flames.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
